How much should good yard lighting cost?

?
We recently decided to improve the lighting along our walkway, and throughout our landscaping. However, after we got a quote, we were surprised that the prices came back so high -- in fact, each light fixture cost ~$200, so the all-in cost with installation was estimated at $4,000. Is $200 per fixture high, or normal?

$200 is about average, but it depends if they are working around an establish landscape or a new one. This average should definitely include the timer, controller, wiring, etc...
At this point, I would recommend looking into the LED lights that are available now. They are more expensive up front, but the maintenance savings will quickly make up the difference. Typically on a low voltage system you are changing the bulbs once a year or so. LED, every 10 years or so! They are coming out with a much better selection in both fixtures and light temperature, so it is work a look.

$200 per fixture is average and depends upon the fixture you select. Hopefully this estimate includes a timer, photocell, controller, wiring, warranty and the bulbs! :)
