Dave Richards, Co-Founder
As a senior executive with RealNetworks for almost 8 years, Dave oversaw the dramatic growth of the RealPlayer media player business starting in the early days of the Internet to establish Real as the global digital media market leader. Dave developed and launched the RealJukebox music software which within one year became the #1 digital music player. He also led Real’s pioneering work in building a digital media subscription business including SuperPass which grew to 1 million paid subscribers in 2 years. Dave also ran private label subscription services for major sports, news and entertainment companies including CNN.com, MLB.com, NBA.com, ABCNEWS.com, BBC.com, NFL.com and many others.
Prior to RealNetworks, Dave held senior roles at Sybase overseeing client server tools, Internet database product strategy and Internet marketing and Symantec overseeing product management, software development and business development.
After leaving Real, Dave co-founded DigWorks, a digital business development and consulting company. Consulting clients included media and technology startups, Fortune 500 and mid-sized private companies on strategy, business planning, product planning, business development and fundraising.
Dave is a board member and advisor to Unitus, a non-profit dedicated to accelerating the end of global poverty. Dave also writes a blog called DefeatPoverty.com.
Karim Meghji, Co-Founder
Karim is a seasoned executive and entrepreneur with over 20 years of professional experience building successful products and businesses in the consumer software and online service areas.
Early in his career, Karim was a key member of the technical team at Symantec that brought Q&A, a DOS-based consumer database application with a natural language interface, to the Windows platform. He also led development efforts for ACT! 2.1 and 3.0, at the time an industry leading contact management solution.
During his time at Real, Karim led the development effort on the consumer-based RealPlayer which grew from 10M installations to hundreds of millions of installations worldwide. Karim also led the product, technology and operations of the consumer-facing web properties that delivered Superpass (an online video subscription service) to hundreds of thousands of subscribers, the RealGuide (an online ad-supported guide for audio/video on the web) to many millions of unique visitors every month and the first subscription-based online digital music service (MusicPass) and digital movie service (Starz! Ticket). Until recently, he served as Vice President of Music Software & Services, directing product management, technology, media properties, content/programming and business management for Rhapsody, RealNetworks’ award winning music service.
Upon leaving Real, Karim started a technology consulting business, focused on product and strategy advisement along with hands-on consulting for new technology ventures.
Karim serves on the board of Eco-Encore, a “for the public benefit” social business selling recycled products online with proceeds benefiting other environmentally focused non-profits, and as Board Member of the Snohomish County Chapter of Washington Conservation Voters.
