Recommendations – Served Best From Friends!

March 4th, 2010

Word of Mouth RecommendationsWe just recently made some exciting updates to HelpHive!  Since we launched HelpHive.com, one of our main focus areas has been trying to capture the word-of-mouth referral activity that occurs amongst friends, family, colleagues and neighbors offline and bring it online.

Well, this week we took a big step to make it even easier for homeowners to setup and find those recommendations from “trusted people” using HelpHive.com.  How’s that you say?  Read on and see!  And if you’re the kind that likes moving pictures, checkout our video (with a catchy background tune) on How HelpHive Works.

1. To Get Personal, We’ll Start by Getting Social!

facebook

It begins with your social network.  One of the good things about social networks is they capture relationships with many of the people whose recommendations you trust.  By connecting HelpHive with Facebook (our current network of choice), we’re able to take recommendations of Home Service Pros from your friends PLUS THEIR FRIENDS and make them easy for you to find on HelpHive.com using the HelpHive Recommendations List.  Once connected with Facebook, any HelpHive recommendations of Home Service Pros posted by friends are automatically added to your very own Personal Recommendations List and vice versa.  But of course, a picture’s worth a thousand words – and makes for a more interesting blog post, right?  So here it is!

Personal Recommendations

2. So, I’ve connected HelpHive with Facebook, What Next?

To get the most out of your Personal Recommendations List, we suggest you start with the following:

  1. Post your own recommendations of Home Service Pros on HelpHive.  It’s easy and only takes a few minutes.  Simply search on HelpHive for Home Pros you’d recommend, then write a short review – you’ll include a star rating, some comments about what they did for you, and why they were great!  And for doing so, we’ll send you a Thank You – a $10 Starbucks Gift card.  Not a bad deal!
  2. And, since it’s all about recommendations from friends, invite your friends to connect HelpHive with Facebook and post their recommendations too.  The more friends you have sharing their reviews and recommendations on HelpHive, the more recommendations you’ll have on your HelpHive Personal Recommendations List!

3. So Where Do I Find My HelpHive Recommendations List?

“We’ve got an app for that!”…  Using the HelpHive “Quick Access Bar”, your Personal Recommendations List is just a mouse click away from most pages on HelpHive.  The Quick Access Bar shows you how many friends and neighbors are contributing to your Personal Recommendations List as well as how many total recommendations you’ve got.  See it below:

quick-access-bar

And on the Recommendations List, you see the various types of services you’ll find on HelpHive – next to each one is a number…  This is the number of recommendations you have for this type of service professional from friends, friends of friends and neighbors.  Example time:

  • Say I was looking for a Carpet Cleaner… by clicking on the “90 Recommendations for You” button on the Quick Access Bar, I could see that I have 8 recommended carpet & upholstery cleaners…By clicking the “carpet & upholstery cleaners” link, I’d get a list of just those 8 carpet cleaners, and who recommended them.
  • And, say I was looking for recommendations of Flooring Contractors (you’ll notice above I have just 1 recommended Flooring Contractor), I could press the “Ask for a Recommendation” button – this would allow me to send a message to my friends on HelpHive with my request for Flooring Contractor recommendations.

So, what about when you’re searching on HelpHive for a home pro – how would you know whether they’ve been recommended by someone you know or not?  And what if you were thinking about hiring a particular home pro on HelpHive but had a personal recommendation for a different business that you didn’t even know about?  Answers to those questions below!

quick-access-bar1

We’ll use another example: say I needed to have some pruning done.  And I found the business above – they’ve got a pretty good rating.  Well, look here – this business looks different than others on HelpHive.  There’s a purple people box (that means personal recommendations) at the top  of the page .  In this case it’s a friend of a friend who reviewed this business.  So, that might be good enough – maybe I know this person or have heard about them from another friend, so their recommendation is just fine.  But if I’d like some other options, I can go to my Quick Access Bar – look at that!  It’s showing me that I have 10 Recommendations in the Landscape & Yardwork service category (pretty handy eh?).  Clicking on the “10 Recommendations in Landscape & Yardwork” button would result in a list of the 10 recommended businesses, with details about who recommended them.

So, there it is – Personal Recommendations from friends via HelpHive. To get started and create your very own Personal Recommendations List, Login with Facebook on HelpHive.

And as always, if you have feedback on what we can do to make HelpHive better, easier, faster, more useful etc., please let us know.

Happy HelpHivin’!

HelpHive improves search and much more

By Dave
January 13th, 2010

Screen shot 2010-01-08 at 11.25.43 AMWe’ve been listening to all of your feedback and we’ve been hard at work over the holidays responding to your ideas and suggestions.

Today, we just released a significant set of upgrades to HelpHive.  We’ve made a LOT of little refinements (hey, the small stuff counts!) which you’ll notice and appreciate (or maybe you won’t cause it just works so well!) as you use HelpHive.  Here are some of the bigger item highlights:

Improved Business Search

Screen shot 2010-01-08 at 11.26.42 AM

We’ve done some major enhancements to search to help homeowners find the best home service pros for the specialty you’re looking for.  Highly rated businesses now get higher placement and highly rated businesses with lots of customer reviews get even higher placement.  Business listings which have been claimed and enhanced with more details also get more promotion.  Bottom line — highly recommended businesses are at your finger tips even faster.

Easier Referral Network Setup

facebookOne of the most compelling features of HelpHive is to be able to see your own personal referral network of home service pros … recommended by your friends and neighbors.  We’ve made it even simpler to expand your personalized referral network for Facebook users.  Simply click “Facebook Login” link in the header, securely enter your Facebook id/password in a Facebook-controlled pop-up window and your personal referral network is instantly expanded.  You can also use your Facebook login when you post a review or a recommendation … and then optionally publish your review on your Facebook news feed for your friends to see!  And then as you search and browse for home service pros on HelpHive, businesses recommended by your friends and neighbors are automatically highlighted.

New Innovative Reviews for a Cause Program

We’ve been quietly testing a new fundraising opportunity for local non-profits called “Reviews for a Cause”.  This provides an innovative fundraising tool for small non-profits who want to raise up to $1,000 … and get this, their supporters don’t have to write a check!  The non-profit simply promotes a special web link to their supporters and all qualified reviews of home service pros posted by people clicking that link earn the non-profit $10 from HelpHive.  Read more…

Free Referrals for Free Business Listings

We’ve added the ability for all free business accounts to receive direct phone calls plus email messages through the HelpHive Email Contact system.  We’ve also enabled direct phone calls to unverified business listings for improved homeowner convenience.

Improvements to Referral Pro Gold

We launched Referral Pro Gold, our premium referral service for businesses, a few months back and we’ve received lots of great feedback from home service businesses.  We’ve got only positive feedback on our performance pricing model where a business only pay a commission fee when they receive a referral which turns into a job.  Here are a few changes we’ve made to make using Referral Pro Gold even better:

  • Improved the phone call Direct Connect experience
  • Reduced our commission cap from $1,000 to $250 (for companies with BIG jobs)
  • Increased time from receiving referral through doing job from 9 weeks to 17 weeks
  • Added more help info to the Referral Center (where you self-manage your referrals)

More about Referral Pro Gold >

New Free 30 day Trial for Referral Pro Gold

We are now happy to announce that all businesses can experience a FREE 30 day trial of Referral Pro Gold, our premium referral service for businesses.  This includes the extensive onsite and offsite promotion for your business giving you more exposure to 10,000’s of Puget Sound area homeowners.  Businesses can view a dashboard for all of the referrals they receive on their own private Referral Center webpage.

Innovative Reviews for a Cause launched

By Dave
January 8th, 2010

school-fundraiserHelpHive recently launched a new, innovative fundraising program designed for non-profits including schools and clubs who want to raise up to $1,000.

It’s really simple … and your supporters don’t have to write a check!

We create a page for you on HelpHive.com with an easy-to-remember link like helphive.com/myorg which you promote to your fans and supporters.  They go to this page and then any qualified reviews of a home service pro they post during that session earns the non-profit a cool $10 from HelpHive.

Pretty cool, huh?

And we’ve made it very easy for your fans and supporters to share this promotion with their friends and family through email, Facebook, Twitter and more.  So, it’s the fundraising program that keeps on giving!

And since it only takes about 5 minutes to post a business review on HelpHive, this is an incredibly time efficient way for your supporters to help you raise money.

Here is an example of Reviews for a Cause page for Soundview School.

If you’re interested in learning more about Reviews for a Cause as a fundraiser for your non-profit, please contact us.  NOTE:  Currently only offered for reviews of Puget Sound area businesses.

HelpHive joins MBA and Shoreline Chamber

By Dave
January 5th, 2010

HelpHive has just joined Master Builders Association of King & Snohomish Counties, the oldest and largest builders organization in the USA!  We are proud to support MBA as they celebrate their 100 anniversary!!  Yesterday, we just received a commissioned, commemorative book celebrating 100 years of MBA.  Some great history and photos here!

HelpHive also joined our local chamber, Shoreline Chamber of Commerce.  While HelpHive serves the whole Puget Sound area (and soon many more USA markets!), we thought it was important to support the community where our office is based in Shoreline, WA.

We are looking forward to getting involved with both organizations over the coming weeks and months.  We’ve already signed up for participating in events in the next few weeks!

HelpHive “Bees” buzzing at Seattle Home Show

By Dave
November 19th, 2009

A couple of weeks back, HelpHive managed a booth at the Seattle Home Show. We had a lot of interest from homeowners in our referral model for finding a quality home service professional.  We had some volunteers who wore the HelpHive “bee” costume! Kids loved talking with and getting their pictures taken with the bee! Here are 3 of the, now famous, bees…

sharon beebeth beejulie bee

How much does HelpHive cost?

Many people at the Home Show asked, “how much does HelpHive cost?” We cheerfully responded, “HelpHive is free for homeowners!” Almost everyone immediately changed demeanor from skeptical to beaming!   Many people had heard of Angie’s List and said they wouldn’t use a paid service for finding service professionals. People also loved the fact that HelpHive is an open, independent review platform. Everyone can post reviews and everyone can see everyone else’s reviews. This creates a level of transparency and accountability not offered by paid subscription services like Angie’s List.

Referrals from friends

We then went on to explain how HelpHive was a new kind of independent review site where reviews of businesses by your friends and neighbors are highlighted for you.  HelpHive creates a unique-to-each-person personal referral list of home service professionals.  We bring your word-of-mouth referral network online saving you lots of time and benefiting from the experiences of your existing trusted sources.

Referral Pro Well Received

We also had a lot of inquiries from home service professionals about how the HelpHive referral system worked for businesses.  We explained that we have designed a performance-based referral service called Referral Pro.  When homeowners find and contact a business through HelpHive which results in a job, Referral Pro businesses pay HelpHive a small commission.  So, homeowners win because they are getting friend and community vetted service professionals and businesses win as they pay (HelpHive) when they earn a real job.  Referrals are a win for everyone!

Changes We’ve Made on HelpHive.com Today

November 10th, 2009

In the last week we’ve spoken to many businesses, some reaching out to us and some we’ve reached out to; some that just learned about HelpHive.com, some that have known about and have given us feedback over the last few months; some with Unclaimed Business Pages and some with Claimed Business Pages.  The focus of our conversations has been how HelpHive works, the benefits and value of HelpHive to businesses and ensuring the facts of HelpHive are accurately represented.

As a result of the constructive feedback we’ve heard, we’re hoping to be responsive with the following changes:

Feedback: “I don’t like having the HelpHive Phone Number on my business listing page”

Feedback: “My business is listed currently – I want to be removed from HelpHive – will you?”

We also want to ensure you have the facts, especially in light of false information and half truths that are being purported in the business community.  As such, we’ve published a document hoping to “Set the Record Straight”.  Highlights of what you’ll read:

  1. We are a legitimate, local business with the goal of building a trusted review site coupled with a low cost, performance-based advertising model for local service businesses.
  2. Referrals via HelpHive are EXCLUSIVE to your business.  We DO NOT sell, redirect, pass along or give customer referrals and leads to a business other than the one that a customer on HelpHive is attempting to contact.
  3. Our focus is on helping businesses get new customers to sustain and grow their businesses.  We HAVE NOT and ARE NOT trying to sell businesses their own customers – in fact, our program specifically and explicitly enables businesses to mark referrals as NOT QUALIFIED because they are existing customers.
  4. We do track referrals as our business model is based on our ability to perform (i.e. we get paid when businesses get paid), however we ARE NOT trying to get in between a business and it’s potential customer – once the connection is made between a business and a potential customer via HelpHive, our approach is 100% based on businesses telling us what happened with that referral.

We want to win your business and hope you’ll give us that chance – our entire reason for being is to provide a significantly better alternative to the prevailing non-performance-oriented advertising options that you’ve historically been limited to.  If you’ve heard or read recent rumors or claims about HelpHive, we hope you’ll read our “Setting the Record Straight” document and give us a chance to make sure you have all the facts before making a judgment.

Thanks

Karim and Dave

Selling My Referrals to Other Businesses?

November 7th, 2009

I just spoke with a local Seattle area business owner (we’ll call him “Business 1″, or B1 for short) who received a call from another local Seattle area business owner (we’ll call him “Business 2″, or B2 for short).  B1 told me that B2 made the following claim:

  • a referral was received via HelpHive.com – he was prepared to do the job, only to find that another business had stepped in on the job
  • that must mean that HelpHive.com took the referral and sold, gave or sent it to a competitive business

B2 may have lost the job but it wasn’t due to HelpHive.com because:

  1. Given our business policy and practices we DO NOT NOR DO WE HAVE ANY INTENTION of taking a lead, referral or job destined for one business and passing it on to a different business.  period.
  2. Our current site and system have  NO SUCH TECHNICAL CAPABILITY.  It just plainly and simply can’t do this.

BEWARE OF FALSE INFORMATION about HelpHive.com. Please call us if you have questions or concerns about HelpHive.com – give us the opportunity to provide you with the facts so you can make an informed judgement vs. a judgement based on the myths and untruths that others are passing off as truthful statements.

HelpHive Launches Paid Plan – Offers FREE Video to Businesses

October 21st, 2009

clockThe past 24 hours have been a full 24 hours as we launched our Paid Plans!  Additionally, we announced a partnership with TurnHere, a leading online marketing services company, that provides businesses with a cost effective way to produce high quality, professional video for their businesses.  Wait – there’s more!  We also, made some substantive user experience improvements to various parts of HelpHive, most notably our call system for handling, tracking, directing, recording and otherwise facilitating connections between homeowners and home service professionals.  Read on for details!

Paid Plans

The Referral Pro Plan and the Referral Pro Gold Plan launched today – these plans carry their namesake as the fundamental and core benefit for businesses who signup for the plans on HelpHive.  That benefit being referrals!  So, what’s the difference between a referral and a lead?  Quality, value and ultimately the business that derive from each.  Given HelpHive’s referral network model and approach, where recommendations and referrals from friends and neighbors power the homeowner experience, we see high quality contacts (referrals) flowing through the site.  And a high quality referral = greater probability of winning the job, and a lower cost of sales for the business.  Alongside our unique approach of connecting homeowners to home service professionals via referrals, we’ve packaged our paid plans in a “business friendly” way.  First, businesses pay a small job commission or a nominal qualified referral fee (if a referral doesn’t result in a job) vs. a fee for leads, clicks, calls etc.  We’re confident in our referrals – as such, we’re ready to take a truly performance based approach and “only get paid when the home service business gets paid”.  Secondly, we’ve made it very easy for businesses to tell us when a referral is qualified – and if it’s not qualified, the business pays nothing!

videoFREE Video via TurnHere Partnership

Also, as part of our launch, we announced a partnership with TurnHere.  The folks at TurnHere have come up with a scalable, and innovative approach to producing high quality, professional videos for small businesses at a very affordable price point.  Our partnership with TurnHere enables us to offer 60 second, professionally produced videos to businesses on HelpHive who have claimed (or added if they weren’t already there) their business pages for FREE!  We’re excited to be partnering with TurnHere – the numbers show how effective video can be for small businesses…  Some stats (source: TurnHere & partner study):

  • 52% of viewers took action after seeing an online video ad
  • 28% looked for more information
  • 16% bought something

Video really does help tell a service-based businesses story – after all, if you’re hiring a service professional, the product is them!  We look forward to working with the folks at TurnHere, enhancing the value proposition of our FREE business pages with video and providing a richer experience for homeowners using HelpHive!

And It Doesn’t End There

Phone+RingingAs part of any update we do, we also made a slew of user interface and experience improvements and enhancements…  Most notably, we did another deep pass at improving the experience of our call system.  Given the importance of the phone in connecting homeowners with home service professionals, we felt it warranted the investment and effort basd on what we learned over the past few months!  So, what exactly does this all mean?  Well, we greatly improved the direct connect call experience, streamlined menuing and call prompts, moved to a friendlier human vs. computer generated menuing system and much more!  And then of course lots of bug fixes and tweaks!

Business Owner’s Roundtable – Feedback, Food and More!

September 23rd, 2009

Business Owner Roundtable, Sept 2009This morning we hosted a roundtable discussion with a group of HelpHive business owner’s. Leading edge businesses who are looking for new and innovative ways to attract new customers…

From carpet cleaners, to home organizers, to landscape designers, the feedback was extremely insightful as we shared our thoughts on our unique business model and approach to ourselves making money!  We’d quote all the great constructive feedback, but we’re not quite ready to roll out our paid product just yet :-)   But stay tuned – it’ll be here soon enough…

A few comments, though, that stood out:

  • “A performance model is better than an advertising model.  I don’t like writing checks for marketing not tied to results.”
  • “Things are definitely changing – the way customers find us, the way they want to communicate with us and they way they want us to communicate with them.”
  • “Everyone here I’m sure is willing to pay for results.”
  • “The concept you have beats any other form of advertising out there…”
  • “I’m hoping you guys can give <competitor> a run for their money!”

We thank the following businesses for attending and participating candidly in today’s discussion:
